Diamonds Galore

The inspiration for today’s stitch was an embroidery diagram Pinterest served up to me after last week’s post. I considered replicating the connected squares by using Smryna Crosses but chose to minimize it via single stitches. I love the precise elegance of it.

As with last week’s stitch, this stitch would be a beautiful floor, sky, wall, plain background, or roof. Notice how the 3X3 diamonds are tent stitches skipping a row in between. You could add small seed beads in those intersections for an even more elegant stitch that would be gorgeous on clothing.

The stitched sample is me playing on 18-mesh canvas with Pepper Pot Silk. I like single strand threads for stitches like this. I like the added height that single strand threads, such as perle cotton, silk perle, single strand silk, and metallic braids add to an area.

The inspiration for today’s stitch was an embroidery diagram I found on Pinterest. It’s another example of what I call Pattern Stitching. I wrote several posts about that a couple years ago (here, here, and here) that provide you with additional insight and ideas for pattern stitching.

The precise pattern makes a beautiful floor, especially if there is gorgeous shading to be shared (as the stitched sample illustrates). A tone on tone version, while more subtle, serves well as a back drop, such as a sky, wall, bed or seat cover, or roof.

The stitched sample uses Princess Perle on 18-mesh. I like single strand threads for stitches like this. I like the added height that single strand threads, such as perle cotton, silk perle, single strand silk, and metallic braids add to an area.

Skipping Along

Today’s stitch explodes an old stand by stitch, making it perfect for a small to medium-sized area with shading.

The stitched sample is from our friends The Marquis Sisters (@themarquissisters on instagram) and uses Straw Silk on the ground of an adorable Raymond Crawford rooster. It’s a great thread choice for the area AND this stitch as the color variations on the thread work perfectly with the colors of the painted ground.

Clearly, the stitch is perfect for a ground cover and, by extension, a green field. I would love to see it as a floor with two different colors. It would be a charming sky with a lightweight Silk Perle or even choppy water with Petite Silk Lame.

Today's stitch comes from one of my very first (and very favorite) Zecca pieces, Sprung. It’s light, sparkly, and simple. The stitched sample uses DMC Perle #8 and Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8) (on 18-mesh).

The stitch was used for the sky. I stitched it in a backstitch of sorts. Starting at the top, I stitched pairs of stitches in vertical columns. I added the horizontal columns after that. I used two colors of blue Kreinik for the accents. Feel free to use one color for all the accents.

This would make a great stitch for a large open field, especially one with beautiful shading. I would use a single strand silk or wool, such as Planet Earth Silk, Vineyard Classic Silk, or Merino Wool for the gray lines and an overdyed matte thread, such as Rainbow Gallery’s Overture or Rainbow Tweed, for the accents. I often interchange sky and background, so it’s easy for me to see this as a background for one of many beautiful florals with a solid background. I love silk perle for stitches like this. My go to 13-mesh is Rainbow Gallery’s Elegance for stitches like this. Dinky Dyes Silk Perle 1000 is another great choice for this. I would use size 12 Perle (similar to Dinky Dyes Perle 600) for 18-mesh.

Travelling Girl

This week's stitch also comes from recent travels. It's bright, cheerful, and fun...something we always expect from our friend, Ruth Schmuff.

Today's stitched sample is a Triple Alternating Nobuko with a single strand of Floche (on 18-mesh). The stitch is one of many Nobuko variations. This larger version is a great all-purpose stitch. It includes an intriguing pattern, is scalable, and can be understated or much more. (Here's another Nobuko variation just for the heck of it.)

The sample is the background for a fun Zecca piece*. Leaving the stitch open adds subtlety, allowing it to recede a bit into the background. This simpler version would make a great background (obviously), sky, tabletop, roof, green field, or pathway. The stitches in this pattern go in two directions; consider using two threads, one for each direction. You could use a matte and a metallic, or two completely different colors.

If you want to dress this up a little, add your favorite metallic in the empty rows. If you want to dress it up a lot, add beads in the empty rows! Combinations like those two would make wonderful clothing or bags. I would love to see this as a Santa coat or a witch dress with a with a rich Very Velvet or Pepper Pot Silk along with a heavier metallic such as Kreinik 1/16" ribbon (for 13-mesh). Soie D'Alger and a size 15 crystal bead would be perfect for 18-mesh.

Kismet

I wanted a stitch.  I wanted a different kind of stitch.  I wanted a different kind of stitch that I liked.  Voila!  Enter the Marquis sisters.  We now have a stitch!

Eleanor and Liz (the aforementioned sisters) used this as a background for an Art Deco Melissa Shirley witch.  It's quite perfect as the background available to stitch was somewhat narrow and tall.  Eleanor used a single strand of Floche.  (Heart, be still.  I love Floche.)

This stitch offers a respectable amount of coverage for such an open stitch.  The doubling up of the hexagons is a nice touch and enhances the openness when paired with the long connectors. 

We already know it makes a great background.  I would love to flip it 90 degrees and use it as a sky or a body of water.  It will be great for architectural elements such as a roof, floor, wallpaper, etc.  When I play with it, I'm already thinking about stitch columns in alternating colors or finishes, or both.  For example, alternate a brown overdyed wool or cotton with a solid brown wool for a roof.  Another idea is to alternate two values of blue Kreiniks for a water stitch.

Mistake? What Mistake?

I was at a needlepoint store recently while a customer was turning in her project for finishing.  (Note:  the first rush of new threads for a new project and turning in that same projects are the two best parts of needlepoint, IMHO.)  The customer shared with me that her snow stitch was a mistake.  It was supposed to be all darning and ended up darning and backstitch.  If this is a mistake, I want to be wrong.  I think it's adorable.

The stitched sample includes Kreinik Metallics Tapestry Braid (size 12) and Flair (on 13-mesh) for an open look on snow, allowing the beautiful canvas painting to show through.   As with many darning stitches, this would work really well for most architectural elements, such as a roof, wall, floor, or outdoor hardscape. For the sturdier elements, such as a roof, have fun with matte threads.  Rainbow Linen, Petite Very Velvet, single strand silks (e.g., Pepper Pot, Vineyard Silk), or single strand wools would all work well.  A lot of fun combinations can be made with those threads too.  :)

Sweet Small Sky

Today's stitch comes from a piece Laura Taylor is working on with a student.  And it's absolutely charming.  It's almost nothing but it's also almost perfect.

The diagram includes two versions of the stitch and illustrates the stitch's scalability.  The diagram on the left includes stitches over three rows and one row.  The other version includes stitches over four and two rows.  The stitched sample on the right reflects the first diagram (over three and one row).  It's sweet and simple and I love it.

The stitched sample is from a sky.  It would make wonderful water with two different blue metallics, or even two metallics of different sizes.  It would also serve well as a sky or mountain stitch.  The key is to use a lightweight thread.  For example, consider using Elegance on 13-mesh or Petite Silk Lame on 18-mesh. .

Stolen Stitches

The month of June is dedicated to stolen stitches.  These are stitches I've come across on other people's work that I've "borrowed" and made for us to own!

Today's stitch is probably the only stitch that I could find its root source...one of Ruth Schmuff's wonderful iStitch books.  Essentially, it is a 3X3 diamond.  What I love about what Ruth did was how she offset the center stitch on each side of the diamond.

A little Upright Cross in each of the intersections makes for a perfect sassy accent.  The stitched sample uses City Needlework Silk and Frosty Rays.  And Scott Church Creative's Easter Duck is ready to rumble!

As with most diamond stitches, there are way too many applications to count so I'm going to ponder thread choices.  I would love to see this in Very Velvet (for the diamond) with a matte accent, such as Rainbow Linen or even Lorikeet, for a coat or roof.  Using Elegance or Pearl Cotton (for the diamond) with a lightweight Kreinik (for the accent) would make a beautiful sky.  This would also make a wonderful water stitch with two metallics, such as Kreinik and Petite Silk Lame.  The possibilities are really quite amazing.

Quadfecta

I've been a little obsessed with Star Octagon lately.  Today's post is a perfect example of why and it's a quadfecta of a post. What a great way to close out #whimsicalwednesday for the year.

Let's start with the base stitch.  I expanded Star Octagon by a couple of rows all the way around.  What makes this stitch so infinitely fascinating to me is a. its neutral direction and b. the countless ways to fill the centers. 

Frankly, this stitch is perfect on its own.  It mimics diamonds yet adds a little extra jazz to them.  This would make a great floor, sky, coat...you get the idea.

Once you start filling the centers, it changes everything.  You can go elegant with a contrasting accent and a bead.

You could also fill that 2X2 center space with a Smyrna Cross, a 2X2 Mosaic stitch, French Knots, or four beads.  I like the idea of the single bead (as illustrated) with an oversized bead, say a size 8 or size 6 bead on 13-mesh, or a size 11 on 18-mesh.  A Tila bead could be a truly unique approach.

The next idea integrates tied crosses.

The tied crosses add a slight elevation.  This would be great for a cushion, clothing, or even a cloud.  If you wanted to go really nuts, add a bead over the tied crosses over two rows on the vertical, crossing over the center intersection.  

The last idea offers a unique twist for a completely filled center.  I just used this stitch for a background of a Melissa Shirley Poinsettia Cat.
