So Many Variations, So Little Time

When I originally posted today's stitch more than three years ago, I offered four different choices to fill the open spaces.  Today's #stitchingsunday offers you a fifth idea.  I hope you like it!

The stitched sample is from the same unfinished floral project as this past Wednesday.  (And when I say unfinished, it will never be unfinished.)  It uses Trebizond Silk, Kreinik Metallics Fine Braid (#8), and a size 11 Sundance bead on 18-mesh.

A Note about Diagrams
I use color in diagrams to make them as clear as possible.  The primary function of different colored lines is to illustrate a stitch sequence.  For example, layering of colors demonstrates you add them in that order.  They can also provide ideas on how to integrate additional threads (one line for each color).  Or, you can use the same thread for all color lines.  That's where I encourage you to use your imagination for the space you are stitching!

Today's #stitchingsunday is a riff on a post from last year.

She stitched up one of her new ornaments with a very recent #whimsicalwednesday stitch.  So, of course I love the stitch but I'm thrilled she flipped it on its side.  The stitched sample uses two plies of Soie D'Alger and a Sundance bead.

Or Not

Welcome to a new year of #whimsicalwednesdays!  Let's kick off the year with open stitches, sparkly threads, and beads, shall we?

Let's start with the first stitch.  The stitch is connected octagons with all sides over two rows.  While I am aware the primary shape is the octagon, I see the diamonds first, hence the name.

This version would be great for nature, especially areas that don't need a heavy stitch.  Think water, sky, clouds.  It's a wonderful way to show off the canvas painting.  The stitched sample uses Sparkle! Braid for a sky on 18-mesh.

Make it the "Or Not" version by adding an Upright Tied Cross in the center and a bead inside the diamond.  It's really something, especially when you mix threads and add beads.  A stitcher friend shared a wonderful sample with me.

The first stitched sample uses Kreinik Metallics Medium Braid for the diamonds, Rachel for the Upright Tied Cross, and a Sundance Bead.  It's exquisite and inspiring.  She is using it for a large flower petal.  It would be great for clothing, especially dresses or dramatic coats.  Replace the bead with an Upright Cross and change the focus to matte threads, such as Pepper Pot, Gloriana Silk Floss, or even Straw Silk, and you would have fantastic greenery.

The second stitched sample is an illustration of thread weights.  The sample includes Soie D'Alger and a Sundance Bead.  The octagons are two plies of Soie D'Alger and the Upright Tied Cross is a single strand of the same Soie D'Alger.  I love the lightness of it.  And the shading shines through beautifully.

Open Diamonds!

Today's open stitch comes from a Aristeia workshop from several years ago.  It's a great stitch that strikes the perfect balance of an interesting stitch and the beautiful shading on the canvas.

I recommend stitching the gray lines first, followed by the aqua lines, and ending with the bead.

The stitched sample includes Vineyard Silk, Shimmer Ribbon, and a Sundance Bead.  This stitch is great for many larger spaces, whether they are are a solid color or deeply shaded.   It could be gorgeous for a large tree with Vineyard Silk or Pepper Pot Silk (gray lines) and Painters Thread or a subtly overdyed Silk Floss (e.g., Gloriana Silk Floss or Dinky Dyes Silk Floss).   For a rich coat you want to stand out, try Very Velvet and Fyre Werks or Kreinik 1/16" metallic ribbon.

I Can't Help Myself

You're either going to love me or hate me for this one.  My oblique obsession continues into this week's #smallspacesunday.  I continued playing after stitching the sample for the last #smallspacesunday and ended up with a teeny tiny Alternating Oblique Cross stitch!

The stitched sample uses four plies of Soie D'Alger and a Sundance bead for the accent (on 18-mesh).  The alternating oblique crosses filled the space just fine on their own, so there is a case to be made for not including the bead accent.  That is illustrated on the second (bonus!) stitched sample on Instagram.

I can't wait to use this for a tiny coat, dress, or ornament on a stocking.  It would serve well as greenery, with the accent being in a contrasting color.  I also see it as a perfect stitch for a small bird or even a leaf.  There are really countless applications for this stitch.  I hope you love it as much as I do!

Start Small

I'm not going to lie...composite stitches used to intimidate me greatly.  I have a few great books on the subject and would read them with wonder.  "How did they think of this?  How did they see this?"

I can't speak for those teachers but I realized at a recent teaching event to "start small."  I knew what I wanted for a Santa hat, but a. didn't have those books nearby and b. would have been mortified pulling out a book.  So I punted.

I started with a group of one of my favorite stitches.  And then I proceeded to stare at the sheet for a minute, knowing I wanted space.  So I added an accent.  And then I was off to the races by simply repeating this pattern, creating this framework.

Personally, I loved the initial framework but wanted more.  So more was added including beads and a metallic accent with the final stitch for the Santa hat below.  It combines so many wonderful things that are perfect for the holidays.

This stitch would work well for most areas where you want to draw attention.  It would make great clothing, large flower, even water.  It would also make very interesting greenery, with or without the bead.  It really depends on how much attention an area deserves.  Thread choices would be dictated by area.  You could combine some wonderful metallics, such as ThreadWorx Kreinik with 1-2 solid colored metallics for a wonderful water.  Greenery could include Lorikeet, Very Velvet, and/or Silk Straw.  Have fun with it!

Sweetie!

It's a baby orange!  Three threads.  One bead.  One small space.

Today's #smallspacesunday is another composite stitch.  Part of the magic comes from filling in the open (and not open) spaces with unique threads.

The stitched sample includes City Needlework Silk, Very Velvet, Fyre Werks, and a Sundance Bead.  An Upright Cross is added to the intersection where the threads meet.  The diamond shaped open space is filled with a single bead and the square shaped open space is filled with another Upright Cross.   A trifecta of orange goodness.

Composite stitches offer so many opportunities!  Using the same primary design (from the aqua lines), here are just two more possibilities to fill the open areas.

Any one of these stitches work in both large and small spaces.  Suggestions include pants, a hat, or a bag.  They would make a wonderful architectural element, water, or greenery.  It would also be great for a bird body, as you can add multiple colors to bring the feathers to life.  It's just such an adorable stitch.

Everything but the Kitchen Sink

Technically, this stitch is a composite of small stitches.  However, there are too many elements to name that make it wonderful.  As I was creating the diagram image, no other title that popped into my head after the first one seemed appropriate.  It truly is everything but the kitchen sink.

Believe it or not, the stitch includes only two threads and one bead.  The gray lines are Shimmer Ribbon; the black lines AND aqua lines are one strand of Impressions; the turquoise circles are gold beads.  The best sequence to use (and I say this from experience) is to stitch the gray lines first, followed by the black and aqua lines, and end with the gold beads.  Establishing the pattern with the gray lines will make the rest of it go much easier.  I swear.

Clearly, this stitch belongs in a space you want to draw attention to.  I used it on a dress.  It would make a great roof, Santa bag, sampler area, or grass area (without the beads).  It would also be wonderful as snow, but only if you want that snow to dominate the piece.  Have fun with it.  You can experiment with different sized beads for a more subtle effect.

Little Black Dress

The good news is today's stitch is gorgeous.  And easy.  And looks fantastic on the stitched sample....which happens to be black on black.  So, pay more attention to the diagram this week.  And please enjoy and don't use my name in vain too much.

Did I forget to mention the stitch sample also uses two colors of beads?  Oops.

The stitch is simple with Scotch Squares in alternating directions with a skipped row in between the squares.  (Another wonderful example of how skipping a row opens up a whole new world.)

As you may have already inferred from the title, this stitch is from a little black dress on a recent piece.  So, clearly, it is wonderful for clothing.  Replace the bead with a Cross Stitch and you could have a fantastic floor or any number of architectural elements.  Use a lightweight thread on a beautifully shaded body of water.

More is More

Welcome to July!  The theme this month is "More is More," meaning metallics, beads, and lots of layers.  I hope you enjoy!

The inaugural stitch is a riff on a common #whimsicalwednesday theme, Tied Crosses.  What makes this version pop is the bright matching metallic plus a contrasting bead.  Take a look.

I purposefully added the beads in alternating rows.  The metallic thread was so bright that I did not want to lose that crisp accent by surrounding all of it with beads.  Personally, I like the little break.  That's simply my taste. Feel free to add more beads if your heart so desires.

The stitched sample is from a dress and includes Very Velvet, Fyre Werks, and Sundance Beads.  I think a lot of fun could be had with thread combinations that include pearls (any color) or matte beads. The stitch lends itself to so many areas.  Due to the bling of the stitch, it will work best for an area you want to draw attention to, such as a dress/coat, Santa bag, large hat...I think you get the idea.  The open areas in the stitched version will let any shading show through but I wouldn't necessarily consider this an open stitch because your eye will be drawn to the bright accents.
