Such a Good Kid

Today’s stitch comes from a stocking I did for one of my favorite kids ten years ago. So, said kid is at least two heads taller than me now but still thanks me for the stocking…every single Christmas. I adore him.

Since I stitched this almost ten years ago, I don’t have a clear recollection of where I stumbled across this stitch. What I do remember is I loved it the moment I saw it. Diagonal stitches are not my forte but the contrasting diagonal stripe made all the difference for me. That simple and uncommon accent makes this stitch sing for me. The stitched sample is Pepper Pot Silk (black lines), white Shimmer (gray lines), and green Shimmer (yellow lines). It’s one of three patterns in a checked pattern at the bottom of a Melissa Shirley stocking.

It’s a great all-purpose diagonal stitch. I’m looking forward to including it in a stitch plan for a wooly coat with Burmilana (black lines), a mild metallic such as Glisten (yellow lines), and a darker Burmilana (gray lines). There are many household objects that this will work for, such as a blanket or a pillow. I would love to see it as a blanket with Alpaca (black lines), Silk Lame (yellow lines), and a contrasting Silk Lame (gray lines).

So it’s all about red today. A lot of red, I might add.

The stitched sample is two strands of Impressions (black lines) and Shimmer Ribbon (turquoise lines) on 13M. It’s part of the same sampler I shared with you last week.

Your eyes are not deceiving you…it is a full coverage and diagonal stitch. Oddly enough, what draws me to this stitch are the single tent stitches in between the 3X3 squares (turquoise lines with the Shimmer Ribbon). It adds a tiny element of surprise AND opens up a different pattern for the Impressions (black lines). I look forward to using this stitch for a jacket with Vineyard Silk and a Kreinik Metallic. It will also work well for a roof with two shades of Rainbow Linen or Vineyard Silk.

If you want to glam it up a tiny bit, consider replacing those single tent stitches I mentioned earlier with a seed bead or a Cross Stitch with a different metallic.

Today’s stitch is beautiful…and deceptive. The truth is that it is far easier than either the diagram or the stitched sample portray.

Once I saw the pattern as blocks of diagonal stitches six rows high instead of separate blocks of red stitches (three rows high) and blocks of pink stitches (also three rows high), it all came together for me. It took a couple false starts before this was obvious to me. I think the effect is far more dramatic if you use contrasting colors (as the stitch sample illustrates) versus contrasting finishes in the same color family.

The stitched sample is me playing on blank canvas with Very Velvet (aqua lines) and Shimmer Ribbon (black lines).

This is truly an all purpose full coverage stitch. It would make a wonderful pair of pants with a Gloriana Lorikeet with a Vineyard Silk a or a Soie D’Alger paired with a Gloriana Pashmina. It will make a great tree or ground cover with a combo of a solid Burmilana and a ThreadWorx overdyed Floss or Perle Cotton. Consider using it for a wall with lightweight thread combos, such as size 8 or size 12 silk or cotton perle along with a lightweight metallic, such as Petite Silk Lame or a size 8 Kreinik Metallic.

Sweet Surprise

One reason I am drawn to seasonal needlepoint is it gets put away, forgotten about, and brought out a year later. It’s an early Christmas for me every year because there is always (at least) one pillow I completely forgot I had. Today’s stitch comes from this year’s version of just that pillow. Merry Christmas to me!

The stitched sample uses Splendor (gray lines) and Shimmer Ribbon (black and aqua lines). I recommend stitching the 2X4 rectangles first, as they are all connected so it will be easy to navigate. Follow up with the center square and finish with the Smyrna Crosses in the 2X2 squares. To dress it up, consider replacing the Smyrna Crosses with beads or a single larger bead, such as a 3-4mm pearl.

This is an elegant, full-coverage stitch that will work well for clothing and bags. If you want to dress up the clothing, consider replacing the Smyrna Crosses with four beads or a single larger bead, such as a 3-4 mm pearl. It would work well for many architectural elements, such as a roof, wallpaper, or flooring. To add richness to any architectural element, consider adding a third thread in a darker color for the Smyrna Crosses.

Just Hanging. How About You?

Welcome to October! This month’s stitches come from stuff just hanging around my house. Today’s stitch is from an adorable 3D Christmas ornament I did forever ago.

To the best of my recollection, the stitched sample uses Silk & Ivory (black lines) and Shimmer Ribbon (aqua lines).

I like the additional stitch element of the smaller diagonal scotch element (over 2-3-2) in between the larger squares. I think it adds more interest to the overall stitch. As I created this diagram, I kept thinking this is a large space stitch. (And it is.) However, ornaments are generally small and this stitch worked perfectly. The lesson is to always have an open mind regarding stitch size. Don’t be afraid to use smaller stitches in larger spaces and vice versa.

Clearly, I like this stitch for clothing. Other cute thread combos would be silk floss and Kreinik Metallic for a lighter touch. For more dramatic clothing, consider Very Velvet and Fyre Werks. It would make an intriguing architectural element, such as a pathway or tile floor, with a silk perle (black lines) and an overdyed wool (aqua lines).

It Takes a Village

It's been a little nutty around here for the last few weeks, so I counted on my village of stitcher friends to get me through.  Today's stitch is inspired by a project a friend shared with me a couple years ago.  I've included it on many personal and student projects. It's easy, versatile, and well-behaved.

I say well-behaved because this stitch just adapts to whatever area you put it in.  The example above is from a Santa coat, using Vineyard Silk and Shimmer Ribbon.  I've used or recommended it for snowmen with Crystal Braid (gray lines) and Flair (aqua lines), fruit with Soie D'Alger (gray lines) and Trebizond Silk (aqua lines), and backgrounds with Perle Cotton (gray lines ) and Kreinik Metallic (aqua lines).  And they all worked.

You could reduce the texture of the 2X2 square by replacing the Smryna Cross with four tent stitches or a 2X2 Mosaic stitch.  That combination makes me want to try it for a tabletop, a floor, or even a field of grass.  There are a lot of ways to play with this stitch.

Thanksgiving in January

Last week was Halloween so, of course, this week is Thanksgiving, right?

Today's stitch comes from an apron on a vintage Melissa Shirley Thanksgiving stand-up.  It's a wonderful balance of open, interesting, and sweet.

I recommend adding the gray lines first.  Fill the smaller diamond with a single Upright Cross, followed by four Upright Crosses in the larger diamond.  The stitched sample uses DMC Perle Cotton #8 with Shimmer Ribbon as the accent thread (on 18-mesh). 

I love the mix of thread finishes in the stitched sample.  The single hue makes for a classic look.  Along these lines, I see this stitch (and single hue combo) as perfect for a shirt, field of grass or dirt, tablecloth, clouds, maybe even water.  It strikes the right balance between open and full coverage stitches, allowing the shading to play a role in your final stitched piece.

Mixing colors and finishes would make this a great stitch for more dramatic clothing such as a coat or dress.  I imagine the gray lines with a rich red velvet, the group of four Upright Crosses in a deep red metallic, and the single Upright Cross in a gold or silver metallic.  Try it for a roof or basket with Rainbow Linen for the diagonal lines, Straw Silk for the single Upright Cross, and an overdyed Perle Cotton for the group of four Upright Crosses.  Just a few thought-starters for you!

Halloween in January

The blog posts for the remainder of the month unveil a secret about me.  I've been negligent in returning my Christmas decorations...okay, some Halloween decorations as well...to storage.  The good news for me is I didn't have to scrounge for stitched samples.  The good news for you is today is Halloween!

Today's stitch is illustrated as a background for a vintage Melissa Shirley Halloween ornament.

It is very simple.  The core stitch element is five straight stitches six rows high (on the vertical).  After the core elements are complete, add an accent thread across the top in the middle on the horizontal axis.  Voila!  Perfect background, floor, wallpaper, basket, dress...even a large window!

The stitched sample uses DMC Perle Cotton #8 with Shimmer Ribbon as the accent thread (on 18-mesh).

Nothing Wrong with More Diamonds

Welcome to more diamonds.  While I love the stitch, this post is really a story of threads.

Take a close look at the stitched sample.  It is an interesting exercise in thread weights and distinct finishes. 

The parallelograms surrounding the 6X6 diamonds are two different grays on the diagram and two different matte threads on the stitched sample.  The dark gray lines represent DMC Perle Cotton and the light gray line represents Vineyard Silk.  The diamond is filled with two different metallic threads.  The aqua lines are Shimmer Ribbon and the teal lines are Kreinik Metallics Tapestry Braid (#12). 

This is not the only way to stitch this stitch. Feel free to stitch the parallelograms in a single thread.  Depending on which part of the stitch (the parallelograms or the diamonds) you want to pop, adjust the thread weights accordingly.  Consider metallic parallelograms with velvet diamonds.  Try two different colors of a matte thread for the parallelograms with one color (but two threads) for the diamonds.  There are so many things you can do with this stitch.  It's great for any number of large areas...large fruit (as illustrated in the stitched sample), clothing, baskets, roofs, or floors, just as thought-starters.

Open Diamonds!

Today's open stitch comes from a Aristeia workshop from several years ago.  It's a great stitch that strikes the perfect balance of an interesting stitch and the beautiful shading on the canvas.

I recommend stitching the gray lines first, followed by the aqua lines, and ending with the bead.

The stitched sample includes Vineyard Silk, Shimmer Ribbon, and a Sundance Bead.  This stitch is great for many larger spaces, whether they are are a solid color or deeply shaded.   It could be gorgeous for a large tree with Vineyard Silk or Pepper Pot Silk (gray lines) and Painters Thread or a subtly overdyed Silk Floss (e.g., Gloriana Silk Floss or Dinky Dyes Silk Floss).   For a rich coat you want to stand out, try Very Velvet and Fyre Werks or Kreinik 1/16" metallic ribbon.
