Playing with Diamonds

Today’s stitch combines some of my favorite things and has lots of ways to create variations.

The stitched sample uses three plies of Splendor for the black lines, Soie Perlee for the yellow lines, and two plies of the same Splendor for the aqua lines on 18M. It’s the background for cute saying from & More Threads.

In addition to a great background, I’m looking forward to using it for clothing, especially coats. I love the idea of it for wrapping paper, replacing the green thread used for the yellow lines with a silver or gold metallic, such as Fyre Werks.

The fun begins with the yellow and aqua lines. To start, you can play with the direction of the yellow lines. Horizontal (as pictured) or vertical…it does not matter. I chose horizontal because it was unexpected. You can replace the Upright Tied Cross (aqua lines) with a small batch of Brick Beading, leave it empty, add a straight diamond over 2-4-2 rows, or even add a sequin or more elaborate flat-ish embellisment.

Today’s stitch is an example of one I would have never been able to piece together without my occasionally beloved computer. Yes, I had an idea in my head but how the pieces fit together eluded me.

The stitched sample is the background on a striking Colors of Praise leopard and uses a strand of pink Elegance on 18M. I can already identify some variations for future posts. It may very well become the stitch that keeps on giving.

It makes a fascinating background because it is intriguing yet allows other areas on the canvas to shine. For the leopard, the plan is to draw attention to the flowers with silk ribbons, so this background should be a perfect match.

The stitch is an example of blackwork, an embroidery technique that mimics graphic design. The repeated element resembles a short and wide cross. I used two colors in the image on the right to illustrate how those elements fit together. This block on the right is 22 rows tall and 22 rows wide. That’s almost two square inches on a 13M canvas. Keeping all of that open space clear was a puzzle.

I used a technique I call pivoting. The sequence alternates back and forth between shared holes to create an open stitch without dragging threads across the canvas. Full disclosure. I had absolutely no shame in dragging threads across the areas in between the tiny squares where the groups of stitches meet (illustrated by the gray squares).

A Toast

Let’s raise a toast to today’s cute little stitch. It’s a long overdue variation of Skipping Nobuko from volume 3 of my books.

This stitch is the label on a darling Veuve Clicquot bottle by the one and only C’ate La Vie (instagram.com/catelavie). I used two plies of Soie D'Alger on 18M canvas. It’s definitely a light touch as I want the Veuve name to stand out even more. One is always encouraged to increase the ply count on a stitch to their comfort level.

The stitch is deceptively challenging, especially with compensation. I worked through the compensation by identifying how identical stitches lined up. In this case, the diagonal stitches over three rows and the single stitches over one row (from the lower left to the upper right) were four rows apart from their matching counterparts in both horizontal and vertical directions. The same was true for the stitches stitched from the lower right to the upper left. I began stitching at the top right corner, following horizontal paths. When I hit the Veuve, I counted up four rows from where my needle was to determine if it was a stitch over three rows or one row and what direction it was in. I’m not worried about the dragged threads because I know the Plain Needlepoint I am going to use for the lettering will cover that up.

I’m looking forward to using this stitch on greenery, such as a field or a large tropical leaf, with an appropriate overdyed silk floss or Petite Silk Lame. It will also work well for water with a lovely metallic, such as Radiance. If you want to add a little extra flair, consider using a metallic thread for the stitches over one row. Another fun change is to add a second color to the mix for a more dramatic pop.

Today’s decorative stitch reflects the canvas exactly how it is painted. That’s the beauty of composite stitches.

This stitch is the quilt on a couch on Sandra Gilmore’s lovely canvas, At The Seashore. If you google “Sandra Gilmore at the seashore,” you will see the quilt exactly as it is stitched: red crosses surrounded by white. After identifying what I wanted to do with the red crosses, the squares emerged, and I knew the single intersection between them would be a bead, French knot, or cross stitch. Poof! A composite stitch!

This project is from my in-between-jobs era of the mid-2010s, so thread identifications are a best guess. The yellow lines are four plies of red Splendor, the black lines are white Elegance, and the aqua lines are Neon Rays+. I love the idea of using this stitch for a jacket with Burmilana for the yellow lines, Glisten for the aqua lines, and Vineyard Silk for the black lines.

“-ish” is a Technical Term

I wanted something smooth and round-ish. Took me way longer than I anticipated, but I love where I landed.

This stitch was inspired by Marci’s Scallops from 2023. I sat at my computer and moved blocks of scallop stitches around until something worked. It took longer than I hoped, but I’m very happy with where I landed. The pink coral portion of the stitched sample uses two plies of Soie d’Alger (yellow lines) and Kreinik Fine Braid (size 8) on 18M. The yellow are also uses two plies of Soie D'Alger and Petite Entice.

I can not wait to use this stitch on clothing. I would love to see it on a cute dress or shirt in two contrasting colors, such as blue and green silk floss, for fun polka dots. It will also make a beautiful vase with two related hues in a lightweight metallic, such as Radiance.

It's Back!

Today’s stitch may look familiar. I used a version of it for a background late last year. As completed hydrangeas emerged (with Silk Lame 18), the background started to disappear. So I did something about it.

The original background was stitched with Soie D’Alger. Yes, I considered changing it altogether, but I wasn’t looking forward to removing something I liked. It needed something to stand up against the Silk Lame. Enter Radiance, the new metallic from the Meredith Collection. I love the sparkle and subtle color that Radiance adds. To balance the rows, I chose to add single tent stitches in the opposite direction. The picture on the far right illustrates the ghost stitching (or fake stitching) I used to get to the other side of the leaf.

I’m really happy I hesitated to pull out the original stitching. The addition of the metallic really pulled it together and can stand up to the Silk Lame 18. I can see either version of this stitch as a background for a still life, a monogram, or a simple saying.

The next big question is how the background will end on each edge. Since I didn’t plan ahead on this part, I’m hoping I can add a border with this stitch. Stay tuned.

It's an Odd Name For Sure

Today’s stitch finds its origins (both stitch and name) in my first book of stitches. It’s also a great example of how to deconstruct a stitch to get the results you need.

The stitched sample uses a size 8 DMC Perle Cotton on 13M. I selected a lightweight stitch and thread combo because it’s the background for a vintage pumpkin canvas from Melissa Shirley. So the pumpkins will be the star of this show.

I find many stitches by taking select parts of a different stitch. As I alluded to earlier, this stitch was inspired by my first book. I removed the black and gray lines to make it simpler yet still interesting.

This stitch will make a great sky with an overdyed silk floss. I love the idea of it for a roof with Rainbow Linen. Pair it with white Flair and you have beautiful snow. If you want more coverage, feel free to cover the empty rows with straight stitches from top to bottom of the open space. I always recommend to do that with a contrasting thread (color, finish, or both) so the pattern is more visible.

I’m always happy to find a way to add beads to something. Today’s stitch is one such example.

The stitched sample uses three plies of Splendor (black lines), Petite Silk Lame (yellow lines), and size 8 Sundance bead on a Kirk & Bradley hot air balloon canvas (13M).

The best approach to this stitch is to add the stitches in columns. I added the black lines first, using a backstitch for the vertical lines and then going back and adding the horizontal stitches via a backstitch after those were complete. Not only does this keep visible threads away from the open canvas, but it also provides a place to “bury” your threads. And by bury, I mean to weave your remaining thread around the thread on the back of the canvas. I moved on to the yellow lines and ended with the beads. Quick note on the beads. Since it was a larger bead, I centered it in the square by attaching it with diagonal stitches in both directions.

This stitch can be quickly stitched, adds interest, and plays nicely with others. It is not the star of the show but an excellent supporting player. I love the idea of this as a background on a canvas with a single subject, like a saying or a hot air balloon. It will also serve well as a tabletop for a still life. It can be scaled down a couple of rows if need be, but the size of the larger squares is what makes this stitch. You can also play it down by replacing the beads with a simple X over two rows in each direction.

Evaluate that against the area where you plan to use the stitch and make your final decision. If you start integrating this step into your stitch selection process, you may be surprised at how many stitches you think are large are much smaller than you realize.

By (sometimes) including this step in my own process, I find I am now integrating much longer stitches than I ever thought I would. I used to think a stitch six rows long was super big. I have very much changed my tune, which has helped me expand my creativity, especially for large-space stitches.

A Note about Diagrams
I use color in diagrams to make them as clear as possible.  The primary function of different colored lines is to illustrate a stitch sequence.  For example, the layering of colors demonstrates you add them in that order.  They can also provide ideas on integrating additional threads (one line for each color).  Or, you can use the same thread for all color lines.  That's where I encourage you to use your imagination for the space you are stitching!

Today’s stitch surprised me. I love the stitch as it is diagrammed and I also love it without the beads.

The stitched sample uses two plies of Splendor (black lines), Petite Silk Lame (gray lines), and size 14/15 Sundance Beads on a vintage Melissa Shirley house. (It’s just a single wall of said house, but you get the idea.)

As I stitched this last night, I realized I love the stitch with and without the beads. So, I left some of the beads out of the stitching near the top edge of the tree, so you can make your own choice. I plan on including the beads for the tree. But I’m looking forward to using the version without the beads in the background of an ornament. It is also scalable for larger areas. Adjust the length of the black lines (2-3-2 rows) to, say, over 5-6-5 rows for more open space.

And a shout out to Melissa’s beautiful painting. Shaded areas like this are the reason I absolutely adore open stitches.

The stitched sample uses a size 16 Kreinik on a 13M canvas. The space between columns is not a hard and fast rule. Adjust the number of rows between the columns to your taste. I want to play with other applications for this stitch in the future. I want to use it for a long dress or tall and slender animal, especially on 18M with silk floss or a lightweight metallic. You may also make it a smidge narrower by removing the four stitches that create the outermost rectangle.

As some may have noticed, I’m having a moment with grids. My next version of this stitch will be just that.
